Debt Free Anniversary!

debtfreebohons

SHOUT OUT! Today marks our 1-year anniversary of being debt free!! We paid off the car loan last April Fool’s Day and have been saving up our 6-month Emergency Fund ever since (we’re almost there!). It’s been an interesting year. We’ve cash flowed emergencies, vacations, college, and everything in between. All thanks to Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University.

If you haven’t taken FPU, you’re missing out! I promise no matter where you are in your financial journey, you’ll learn something from Dave.

Do it before time passes and you wish you had.

We’re Not Lucky.

Hi friends! I’ve noticed an interesting pattern ever since becoming debt free. When we speak of our accomplishments, the response “you’re so lucky” gets thrown out as if our success was completely random. Believe it or not, luck had nothing to do with it. It took blood, sweat and a lot of tears to get where we are today {ok, no blood, but that list sounds weird without it…but there were definitely tears}.

To clear up the confusion and put credibility back into our hard work, here are some of the things we did to earn our freedom: Continue reading

Debt Free Bohons

Well, I admit this update is waaayy overdue, but better late than never, right? :)

Remember our “Debt Free by Christmas” goal turned “Debt Free by Thanksgiving” goal turned “May Needs to Find a Job” goal? Yes, that was a fun 3-month season. :) It was the best time I ever had being unemployed {only because we already had a plan})!

Well, I am happy to announce that by the grace of God, WE’RE DEBT FREEEEEEE!!!!

My 2013 Year in Review

Hi friends, I hope you had a wonderful New Year’s Eve and are excited about 2014! My 2013 was definitely one for the books! Here’s a rundown of the high points:

Community.

I’d like to say that I’ve never known the power of community until now, but that’s probably not true. However, all experiences before The Start Experiment have been blocked in my mind thanks to all the awesomeness that’s happened. Continue reading

Dude, You’re So Weird.

It’s been a reoccurring theme in my life the past few years to be totally weird. Here’s one definition of what that means:

weird  (wîrd)
adj. weird·er, weird·est

  1. Of, relating to, or suggestive of the preternatural or supernatural.
  2. Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange.
  3. Archaic Of or relating to fate or the Fates.

However, I think it looks a bit more like this!

Pet Sitting: Week 2

Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 5.40.48 AM

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to watch another home as a way to add more momentum to our debt snowball and more cute dog photos to my Instagram. It was more of a staycation because there was one dog named Mallory and a lot of plants to water (yes, Mallory liked being watered, too!). There was also another fun pool that needed to be used. :) Continue reading

Be Audaciously Awesome

Hello, friends!

The Start Experiment, Round 2 officially began 4 days ago and what an adventure it’s already been! The theme for us #startalum from Round 1 is “Audacious.” That looks like a fun fancy word, but what does it mean?

30 Seconds to May

30SMobile header(via)

Last night I read a really interesting post by author Donald Miller called “How to Tell Your Story in 30 Seconds.” It’s about providing a CliffsNotes answer when someone says “tell me about yourself” or “what do you do.” It’s about doing it in such a way that you form a story, rather than a list of facts. I believe it also helps you add “why” to your “what.” More on that theory here.

So, without further ado, here’s my 30 Seconds to May:

My name is May Bohon. In 2010 God blessed my life by putting a mirror up to how horribly I handled the money He entrusted to me. Since then, I’ve fought my way out of debt, discovered joy in giving, lead personal finance classes and started taking steps towards working for Dave Ramsey so I can turn my passion into a career!

That was fun. :)

Your turn: What’s your 30-second story? What will it be 5 years from now?

Final thought: If you don’t conclude your story with an “!”, then is it really the story you want to tell?

Tip Time!

Happy Friday, friends!

I had a fun time with yesterday’s #StartExp assignment from Jon:

Day 18: Tip Time

One of the best things at the 5 club meetings we do in Nashville is the “Tip Time.” For a few minutes, I open the floor and folks shout out tips that have helped them along the way. Some people share apps. Some people share books. Some people share exercise ideas. It’s a “this worked for me” free for all. Today, I want you to share one tip you’ve had success with in the Facebook group.

I shared what first came to mind on the Facebook page and wanted to share them in the blogosphere as well! :) Continue reading
